Storm floods continue to wreck havoc across Thailand

BANGKOK, September 26 (TNA) - Floods have continued to torment vast neighbourhoods in Thailand’s north, northeast and central plains.

In the northern province of Phichit, persistent rains have caused flooding to spread in areas near the Nan River basin. About 200 more houses have been inundated after rising floodwaters overflowed floodwalls and makeshift dykes, sweeping across nearby communities.

In Phitsanulok Province, the public and private sectors distributed survival kits to110 flood affected families who have been isolated for over three months since their province was hit by the Haima storm in June. Floodwater has been reported over four meters deep in some areas, where boats have become means of transport.

Worsening flood conditions have also been reported in the country’s northeast after water levels in the main Pong and Chi Rivers have risen day by day since the Ubonrat Dam this week increased its water release in order to lower its full water supply level.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Warning Center has warned that Tropical Storm Haitang in the upper part of the South China Sea northeast of Nakhon Phanom province may land on Vietnam on Tuesday. Heavy rains have been forecast in the provinces of Nakhon Phanom, Mukdahan, Sakon Nakhon, Nong Khai, Bung Kan, Udon Thani and Nong Bua Lam Phu. (TNA)
