Vegetarian festival kicks off in Thailand
BANGKOK, September 26 (TNA) - The vegetarian festival kicked off in all areas across Thailand today, with charity activities and active trade of vegetarian food products to serve a number of people who observe the annual event when consumption of all meat products are voluntarily suspended for spiritual merits.
In the eastern Chantaburi Province, for instance, people vividly crowded two charity vegetarian centres in the Muang Municipality this morning to consume and to buy cheap vegetarian food, resulting in traffic congestion in the area.
In Songkhla Province in the Thai South, people, mostly Thai nationals with the Chinese origin, wore white dresses to participate in a sanctity worship marking the beginning of the 2011 vegetarian festival at Tinsulanonda Bridge in Hat Yai.
In the northeastern Yasothon Province, the prices of vegetables have almost doubled, as local traders have claimed the country's ongoing floods in several provinces have reduced local farm produce, including vegetables.
Meanwhile, Deputy Bangkok Governor Dr. Malinee Sukvejvorakit and her entourage visited the China Town or Yaowaraj area in the capital, known as the country's largest centre for vegetarian products, to inspect food safety. Dr. Malinee later told reporters that her team had found no contamination in any food products sold in Yaowaraj but she had instructed officials concerned to regularly conduct food safety checks at fresh markets and retail stores in their respective areas to protect local consumers.
This year's vegetarian festival in Thailand will formally start tomorrow and end on October 5, although a number of people began their consumption of vegetarian food products on the eve of the nine-day event. (TNA)
