Thailand, Japan confer trade cooperation

BANGKOK, September 25 (TNA) - Senior Thai and Japanese officials have held talks and discussed problems confronting trade between the two countries as well as how to maximise benefits out of the Japan-Thailand Economic Partnership Agreement (JTEPA), said Yangyong Phuangrach, permanent secretary for Commerce Ministry.
Discussions on the 3rd JTEPA were held in Tokyo recently and Thai and Japanese officials attended the meeting exchanged information on how their country gained from JTEPA, Yangyong said.
Both sides also discussed bilateral trade and service, tourism, agriculture, forestry, fishery, food safety and future plans on trade activities, he said.
Thai delegates raised certain issues including Thai businessmen still unable to maximise use of JTEPA and the high fee collected by the Japanese government for issuing goods origin certificate during the meeting, Yangyong said.
Under the JTEPA which has been enforced since November 2007, combined trade value between the two countries totaled about US$38.7 billion during the first seven months this year of which Thailand recorded a trade deficit of US$9.3 billion.
Major Thai exports to Japan are rubber, automobile and parts, computer and parts, plastic resins, processed chicken, and frozen fish. Thailand imports mainly machinery and parts, steel, auto parts, electrical appliances, chemical products, and electric circuit from Japan. (TNA)
