Thailand, China prepare five-year cooperation plan

BANGKOK, September 25 (TNA) - Thailand and China are preparing to sign a second five-year economic cooperation plan as Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra plans to visit the country late next month, said Thai Foreign Affairs Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul.
Surapong said he had held talks with his Chinese counterpart Yang Jiechi on the sidelines of the 66th United Nations General Assembly annual session being held in New York and both agreed that visits by senior officials to each other country should be held more frequently as Thai prime minister plans to pay official visit to China in late October.
He said the two countries are preparing the second five-year Joint Action Plan, covering between 2012-2016, and he hoped that the accord could be signed during the upcoming visit to China by the Thai premier.
Surapong said he had told Yang that Thailand was pleased to see the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and China signed the guidelines for the implementation of the declaration of conduct (DoC) and simultaneously happy to see that relations between the grouping and Beijing have strengthened.
The DoC was signed in November 2002 as a code of conduct for all parties involved in diplomatic issues in the South China Sea. It is a political document aimed at safeguarding stability in the South China Sea, promoting political mutual trust, advancing cooperation and creating favourable conditions and atmosphere for the interested countries to ultimately settle their disputes by peaceful means.
Also, Surapong said he had discussed bilateral relations with his Vietnamese counterpart Pham Binh Minh after the two countries celebrate 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations. He said had told the latter that Yingluck and himself would officially visit Vietnam on October 17 and to confirm that Thailand is ready to host the 2nd Joint Cabinet Retreat which has been suspended over seven years.
Foreign ministers of ASEAN attending the UN General Assembly session on Saturday also held informal meeting and exchanged opinions on cooperation between ASEAN and the world body and prepared agendas for discussions between them and the UN secretary-general and the UN General Assembly president. The discussions will be held this Tuesday. (TNA)
