Thai PM calls for good governance

BANGKOK, September 25 (TNA) - Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra along with opposition Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva early Sunday urged every society in the country to perform duty with transparent and good governance.

The calls were made during a march from Lumpini Park to nearby Silom Road in central Bangkok. The anti-corruption march was led by both of them and accompanied by Senate Speaker Gen. Theeradej Meepien, Pongsak Assakul, acting chairman of the private-run Thai Chamber of Commerce and also acting chief of the Anti-Corruption Network.

People from all walks of life and members of 30 private organisations also joined in the march.

During the march, Yingluck led the marchers in making a vow that people from every sector of the society must oppose every form of corruption, uphold good governance in performing their duty and strictly adhere to the law with an aim to bring sustainable development to the country.

Former prime minister Abhisit later presented a brown envelope containing documents to Yingluck, urging her government to help solve farmers’ huge debts problem.

He also told journalists that his Democrat Party would closely monitor the government to prevent corruption and preserve the country’s interests.

The opposition is worried about the government’s policy especially on rice mortgage programme by farmers and on first-time home-buyers which do not assist the poor, he said.

The government’s populist programme was made during the election campaign of the ruling Pheu Thai Party. (TNA)
