Thai government eyes on “Buddhist Bank”

BANGKOK, September 24 (TNA) - Thai Minister Attached to the Prime Minister’s Office Surawit Khonsomboon said on Saturday that the government is now taking steps to set up a “Buddhist Bank”, the first of its kind in Thailand, to promote institutions and activities in Buddhism.
Surawit, who oversees the National Office of Buddhism, revealed that he will soon push for a draft bill for the establishment of the new bank, which had been approved its first reading by the previous House Committee on Religions, Moral, Ethics, Arts and Culture and is pending submission to the Sangha Supreme Council.
Surawit noted that the new Buddhist Bank will be run under the same management principles of those of local commercial banks, but with an initial funding sponsored by the government.
According to the minister, deposit accounts will then be opened for local Buddhist temples and interested individuals, aimed to help generate extra income for Buddhist religious activities; while reducing theft cases at the temples, as they will no longer need to keep cashes on-hand.
The new minister said that he believes the new bank will be successfully established during his Pheu Thai administration, acknowledging that after the approval of the Sangha Supreme Council, he will forward the proposed plan to the Cabinet then to the Thai Parliament for a final passage. (TNA)
