Thailand, Israel to strengthen cooperation

BANGKOK, September 24 (TNA) - Thailand and Israel have agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation in trade and all other areas, including investment, tourism and science and technology.

Thai Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul, who is in the middle of his participation in the United Nations General Assembly in New York, said that the agreement was reached during his meeting with Israeli Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Avigdor Lieberman on the sidelines of the UN annual session on Friday, noting that two-way trade between Thailand and Israel has now totaled about 1 billion US dollars annually.

For tourism, Surapong acknowledged that about 200,000 Israeli tourists visit Thailand annually, and that he has assured his Israeli counterpart peace has now returned to Thailand, where Israelis are always welcome.

Surapong said he also thanked the Israeli government for taking care of Thai nationals working in Israel and expressed his hope that Israel would accept more Thai workers in the future. (TNA)
