Thailand, US to cooperate more on non-communicable diseases

BANGKOK, September 24 (TNA) - Thailand and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have agreed to increase their cooperation on controlling non-communicable diseases which have become more severe and killed a large number of patients worldwide.

Thai Deputy Public Health Minister Torphong Chaiyasarn said on Friday that the agreement was made during a meeting between himself and the CDC director, Dr. Thomas R. Frieden, on the sidelines of the High-Level meeting of the United Nations General Assembly on Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), held in New York from September 19-20.

Torphong noted that his discussions with Dr. Frieden focused on strengthening cooperation between Bangkok and the CDC in preventing and controlling non-communicable diseases, including diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity and cancer, which have now become more severe throughout the world.

According to the Thai minister, The US-CDC has assisted Thailand in developing knowledge of Thai public health ministry personnel on non-communicable diseases. The cooperation will later extend to other member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Latest statistics by the World Health Organization (WHO) showed that two-thirds out of about 36 million patients suffering from non-communicable diseases worldwide died yearly, about nine million of them passed away before 60 years old due to smoking, taking alcoholic drinks, improperly eating food and taking no exercises.
