Thai PM to visit Myanmar early next month

BANGKOK, September 24 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra plans to pay an official visit to neighbouring Myanmar early next month.
Thai Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul, who is in the middle of his participation in the United Nations General Assembly in New York, told his Myanmar counterpart Wunna Maung Lwin of the plan during their bilateral talks on the sidelines of the UN annual session on Friday (local time), insisting the Thai government’s policy on strengthening relations with neighboring countries.
Surapong said that he also proposed the 7th meeting of the Thai-Myanmar Joint Commission and discussed the possibility of reopening of a border pass in Mae Sot District of Thailand's northwestern Tak Province, acknowledging that his Myanmar counterpart had promised to forward the issues to concerned parties in Myanmar.
The new Thai foreign minister revealed that he took the opportunity to congratulate Myanmar for its ongoing democratization and national reconciliation and expressed his hopes for Myanmar to achieve the processes; while welcoming the establishment of a human rights committee in Myanmar and promising that Thailand would support Myanmar’s roles as the chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2014.
