Thai defence minister ends visit to Cambodia

BANGKOK, September 24 (TNA) - Thai Defence Minister General Yuthasak Sasiprapa returned to Bangkok on Saturday, from a two-day official visit to neighbouring Cambodia, claiming that bilateral relations between Bangkok and Phnom Penh have now improved.
General Yuthasak told reporters that Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to jointly prevent and crack down cross-border crime, to study on the possibility of opening more permanent border checkpoints and to cooperate on public health issues.
According to the Thai minister, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen has also proposed a prisoner exchange programme between his country and Thailand. The proposal will be discussed among concerned officials later.
So far, 37 Thai nationals have been jailed in Cambodia, including two yellow-clad activists, Veera Somkwamkid and Ratree Pipattanapaiboon who have been imprisoned on charges of intruding onto the Cambodian territory and spying. The Thai defence minister noted that help should be extended to all of Thais jailed in Cambodia.
General Yuthasak said officials of the two countries will also meet to lay out agendas for the forthcoming Thai-Cambodian General Border Committee (GBC) meeting, scheduled for November 2011, covering those on a disputed border area, troops withdrawal and cooperation in various fields. (TNA)
