Thai Princess extends medical assistance to Cambodia

BANGKOK, September 24 (TNA) - Thailand's Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn has extended a second-round, five-year medical assistance to fight malaria and the acute febrile illness in neighbouring Cambodia.

Thai Public Health Minister Wittaya Buranasiri said that the royal assistance was in response to Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen's request that the Thai help be extended for another five years to cover other villages facing the disease.

Wittaya acknowledged that the first-round medical assistance offered by the Thai Princess will expire on September 30, 2011, and that the new five-year medical assistance, starting in 2012, will cover every village in a district of Rattanakiri Province and another district in Mondulkiri Province in Cambodia bordering Vietnam.

Under the royal assistance programme, Thai medical experts will provide knowledge, training and diagnosis on the two deadly diseases and on prevention of the diseases to Cambodian doctors. (TNA)
