Thai foreign minister holds bilateral talks in New York
BANGKOK, September 23 (TNA) - Thai Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul has held a series of bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the 66th UN General Assembly in New York.
On Thursday, Mr Surapong met with his Portuguese counterpart Paulo Portas to discuss the enhancement of long-standing ties between Thailand and Portugal that will reach its 5th centennial anniversary this year.
The two ministers agreed during their meeting to increase the amount of mutual investments and tourism promotion and to cooperate on renewable energy projects.
Later in the day, Mr Surapong also met with U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Kurt Campbell, during which the U.S. envoy conveyed congratulations to the Thai official on his appointment as foreign minister. The U.S. official also inquired about the state of Thai politics and national reconciliation, while reaffirming that cooperation and assistance for countries in Asia would remain intact despite a U.S. economic downturn.
Meanwhile, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda hosted an evening reception on the occasion of the 66th UN General Assembly, to thank the international community for supporting Japan in the aftermath of the March 11 disaster. (TNA)
