Flood victims hold protest in Thailand
BANGKOK, September 23 (TNA) - More than 500 flood victims in a district of Chai Nat province have closed a floodgate after they could no longer tolerate rising floodwaters. Protestors say they are frustrated over slow government response on the flood situation after almost two months of havoc.
Having seized the floodgate, villagers in Manorom district also demanded Chai Nat governor to quickly seal off leaks after floodwaters damaged two traffic lanes on Phaholyothin Road. Floodwater measuring over one metre had been inundating the road although the water level in the Chao Phraya River started receding since Thursday.
In more updates, people in Uthai Thani province have had to wade through chest-deep floods for a distance of nearly 100 metres near the provincial seat. Some even had to change their clothes on an overpass before going to work. The flood level on the outskirts of the province became worse as nine villages had been hit by flooding as high as six metres.
In northeastern Buri Ram province, the governor had also reported worsening conditions as excess water from Nakhon Ratchasima Province had reached a damaged dyke.
Down in southern Thailand, as waterways diverted along with heavy rains this week, the Trang riverbanks in Trang province had overflowed and collapsed. Drivers could only drive on one side of the road while hundreds of homes had been inundated. (TNA)
