Thai defence minister visits Cambodia

BANGKOK, September 23 (TNA) - Newly appointed Thai Defence Minister Yuthasak Sasiprapha left Bangkok Friday morning for a two-day official visit to Cambodia, the first time since he took office early last month.

During the visit, Yuthasak will hold talks with his Cambodian counterpart General Tea Banh and will also pay a courtesy call on the Prime Minister Hun Sen.

General Yuthasak’s visit to Cambodia came just more than a week after the separate visits of Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, and former Thai premier Thaksin Shinawatra, to Cambodia.

The Defence Minister said he hoped his visit would build better bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

Cambodia and Thailand have had sporadic border conflicts over a territorial dispute near the Preah Vihear temple since the UNESCO listed the temple as a World Heritage Site on July 7, 2008, and witnessed fierce border fighting in February and April during Thailand's Democrat-led administration.

However, the military tension has eased since former Thai Premier Thaksin Shinawatra's Pheu Thai Party won a landslide victory in the general elections on July 3, 2011. (TNA)
