VEGETATION EXPANSION MINIMIZES GLOBAL WARMING

Medan, Sept 23 (ANTARA) - The main cause of global warming is the high level of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere. Therefore, to reduce it, extended green plants area is needed, experts said.
"Lately, the green plants existance in the world has decreased, mostly because of human's action. This results in the increasing of the temperature," Professor of the Faculty Mathematics and Physics (MIFA) University of North Sumatra (USU) Retno Widhiastuti said here Tuesday.
Besides local factors like geography and topography conditions, Widhiastuti explained that another important factor to control the climate is atmospheric temperature.
"Temperature is the source energy that causes climate changes. The atmospheric temperature is also determined by green house gasses," she added.
The most important role of forest vegetations is absorbing CO2 and change it into carbohydrate and oxygen (O2) by way of photosynthesis with the hel of solar energy.
"The carbohydrate is then processed into parts of the trees, including stems, leaves, roots and others. Thus, the greener the crops, the more intensive the photosynthesis. This can result in more CO2 transformed into O2," Widhiastuti explained.
CO2 is produced from human and animal respiration, by contaminated and polluted substances from vehicles and industries.
"Simpson and McPherson reported in their research in 1999 that 10 thousand 16-20 years old trees can lower the CO2 level of up to 800 tons per year," said Widhiastuti.
