Qatar: Israel Must Join Nuclear Treaty

Vienna, September 22 (QNA) - The State of Qatar said Israel must join the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and comply with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) 's demand to submit its nuclear facilities to the agency's safeguard regime if the Middle East is to become a nuclear weapons free zone.
Addressing the 55th Regular Session of IAEA General Conference, Dr. Ahmad Hassan Al-Hamadi Director of the Department of Legal Affairs Ministry of Foreign affairs and Member of the National Committee on the Prohibition of Weapons said implementing this step would contribute at achieving the international peace and security and to focus attention on enhancing economic growth and social development among the countries of the region rather than being the verge of a nuclear arms race.
A long time has passed since the adoption of the Resolution on the Middle East at the 1995 NPT Review Conference without considering any substantial progress to promote nuclear disarmament and nonproliferation in the region, said HE Ambassador Al-Hamadi.
In their 1995 agreement, the parties to the treaty, committed themselves to a set of principles and objectives for nuclear nonproliferation and disarmament.
This represents a grave imbalance that seriously threatens peace and stability in the region, he said, urging the international community to persuade Israel to join the Nonproliferation Treaty.
On Qatar's strategy to promote peaceful uses of nuclear energy, Dr. Al-Hamadi said his country attaches great importance to the IAEA's safeguards system as a key element in managing the nuclear non-proliferation regime under the NPT, the Qatar official said.
He reaffirmed Qatar's deep appreciation for the IAEA's technical cooperation programs aimed at promoting the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
Qatar seeks to implement more of these projects, which encourage the development of the peaceful applications of nuclear technology, said Dr. Al-Hamadi, referring to the recent national program determining the needs for the next stage.
