Erekat Hails Qatar's Support for UN Bid

Doha, September 22 (QNA) - Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Executive Committee member, Dr. Saeb Erekat on Thursday highly appreciated the efforts being exerted by the State of Qatar led by HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani to support the Palestinian bid for full UN membership, which represents a historical turning point that would change the course of the Palestinian cause.
HH the Emir of Qatar places the Palestinian cause at the heart of his priorities, the PLO official told Qatar News Agency (QNA).
By appealing to the UN member states to listen to the voice of justice and respond to the legitimate request of the Palestinians for a full membership to the United Nations while addressing the opening session of the 66th UN General Assembly on Wednesday, HH the Emir reaffirmed his country's great concern to defend the Palestinian cause, said Dr. Erekat.
The State of Qatar has provided all the necessary support for the Palestinian statehood bid and also assigned international legal experts to prepare the legal framework for the bid document, he continued.
On the Israeli request to resume peace talks, Dr. Erekat denied receiving any official proposal in this regard.
He believes that clear parameters defining the basis for negotiations are key elements for resuming direct negotiations leading to a comprehensive solution.
"Palestine's request for a full membership in the UN must not be linked to talks," he explained.
"The Israeli government is demonstrating that it is not interested in resuming the peace process," said Erekat.
Israel is creating a "De facto" situation by leading intensive settlement plans in the occupied Palestinian territories and creating the Apartheid Wall in the West Bank, he went on saying.
On the announcement made by the Obama administration to use the US' veto if the UN Security Council votes to recognise a Palestinian state, Dr. Erekat said a US veto would "destroy" the two-state solution, expressing hope that the United States will revise its position.
Despite the US threat and mounting pressure, the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) will submit on Friday its bid for full UN membership on Friday and ask the Security Council to vote on it.
Based on the reaction of the Security Council, we will decide either to submit our request to the UN General Assembly or keep on going back to the UN Security Council again, said Erekat.
"Our request for UN permanent membership for the Palestinian State with 1967 borders and capital as Jerusalem is the only mean to maintain the option of two states and to preserve the peace process," Erekat concluded.
