Abbas: Qatar Plays Significant Role in Palestinian UN Statehood Bid
Doha, September 22 (QNA) - Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas praised the significant role played by the State of Qatar to serve the Palestinian cause, especially with regard to the Palestinian bid for UN recognition of statehood.
In an exclusive statement to Qatar News Agency (QNA), Abbas said that Qatar, under the leadership of HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, supported the Palestinian people and the Palestinian cause at various levels, political, economic, media, and even at the humanitarian level.
The Palestinian president expressed thanks and appreciation for Qatar's role, saying that it formed a power factor for them before going to the United Nations to request the legitimate right, obtaining full membership for Palestine in this organization, praising at the same time the significant role played by the Arab Peace Initiative Committee, which had made great efforts on all matters relating to this issue.
Regarding the latest Arab- Palestinian efforts in order to mobilize support for Palestine to become a United Nations Member State, President Mahmoud Abbas said "The Arab side made a great effort during the last period in order to ensure the largest number of states to support the Palestinian right, obtaining full membership at the UN, and we hope to achieve our desire." On Israel's opposition to PA's bid for statehood at the United Nations, described by Tel Aviv as a an unilateral step that would isolate Israel and undermine the internationally accepted frameworks for peace, President Abbas clarified the PA plan aims to delegitimize the Israeli occupation policy, not Israel.
About the US decision to veto any the Palestinian bid for statehood at the UN Security Council, Abbas hoped that President Obama could honor his promise of a Palestinian "State" by September 2011.
For nearly two decades the peace negations have failed due to Israel's settlement policy in the West Bank, demonstrating its determination to destroy all chances of peace, said Abbas.
PA President sees no alternative to push ahead with plans to seek full UN membership for a Palestinian state on the 1967 borders.
Commenting on the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu's call for a meeting in New York this week to relaunch ''direct negotiations, '' Abbas said PA would agree to renew peace talks if based on Israel's recognition of a the Palestinian State along the 1967 borders.
