Collision causes oil spill in Busan harbor
BUSAN, Sept. 23 (Yonhap) -- A collision between a small tanker and a fishing boat caused an estimated 30 tons of Bunker C oil to spill into the sea off the coast of Busan, local maritime authorities said Tuesday.
The Busan Coast Guard said the 147-ton Ilhae tanker and the 233-ton Tongyong 105
collided just outside the breakwater of the city's south port. It said the oil
leak was from the Ilhae, which was carrying 480 tons of oil.
Damage control teams at South korea's largest sea port said they have built a
floating fence to contain the spill, and are using five ships to remove the oil
from the surface before it sinks to the sea bottom.
It added four private oil spill cleaning companies have been contacted to provide
assistance.
Officers said they are currently trying to determine the exact cause of the
collision by questioning the crew and checking the logs of the two boats.
