Commerce Ministry to push Thailand as logistics hub in Southeast Asian

BANGKOK, September 22 (TNA) - Deputy Commerce Minister Siriwat Kachornprasart has urged Thai exporters and operators to optimize business opportunities from the country trade’s expansion and the formation of ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015, in a bid to turn the country into an ASEAN logistics hub.

Speaking while opening the Thailand International Logistics Fair 2011 in Bangkok, Siriwat said logistics has played a vital role in Thailand’s international trade, especially in promoting products and services exports, which account for some 70 percent of national revenue.

Siriwat said the value of Thai exports is expected to grow by 15 percent this year and to continue to grow in the future once the AEC comes into full swing, which will turn the region into a potential source of investment and huge export market for Thailand, Southeast Asian nations, China and India.

Siriwat said this is a great opportunity for Thai exporters and operators to explore business deals and build up their international business network.

The deputy commerce minister said the government will support local operators in networking with potential partners and logistics operators, both domestic and overseas, and improve the national logistics development plan in a bid for Thailand to become the regional hub for cargo distribution and transportation.

The four-day 2011 Logistics Fair is being held at BITEC on the outskirts of Bangkok. It is jointly organised by the Commerce Ministry with the Thai National Shippers’ Council and the Hazardous Substances Logistics Association. (TNA)
