Malaysia determines to help bring peace to deep southern Thailand

BANGKOK, September 22 (TNA) - Thai Foreign Affairs Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul said on Thursday Malaysia is willing to cooperate with the Thai government in bringing peace to strife-torn deep southern Thai provinces which have been rocked with bloody violence in over seven years in the past.

Surapong said he had talked with his Malaysian counterpart Dato Sri Anifah Aman on Wednesday on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly 66th annual meeting in New York and thanked the Kuala Lumpur government on its cooperation with the Thai government in a bid to help restore peace in deep Southern Thailand.

According to him, the Malaysian foreign minister reiterated that Malaysia had no intention to interfere in Thailand’s internal affairs. However, the Kuala Lumpur government is ready to extend its cooperation to help bring peace as it does not want to see more Thai or Malaysian casualties in the troubled region.

Surapong said he had also extended his condolences over four Malaysians who were recently killed in a bomb explosion in Sungai Kolok district of Narathiwat province. (TNA)
