Houses built in Thailand’s reserve park demolished

BANGKOK, September 21 (TNA) - About 250 national park officials and police on Wednesday razed four houses built illegitimately within a national reserve.

Officials, led by Damrong Phidet, Director-General of the National Parks, Wildlife and Flora Department, tore down a resort and a spacious residence in Na Di District of Prachin Buri Province, an area bordering Cambodia.

Two houses in nearby Wang Nam Kheo District in Nakhon Ratchasima Province were also among the demolished.

The decision followed eviction orders handed down to property owners, stating of their encroachment onto the reserve, but to no avail.

All properties in dispute were built more than five kilometers away from a main highway and surrounded by a forest. However, several luxurious houses equipped with complete facilities still dotted some of the area.

Damrong said that his department would speed on replanting trees in the area. He also urged the local people to help conserve the forest and report on forest encroaching. (TNA)
