PRESIDENT ORDERS DISBURSEMENT OF HONORARY FUNDS FOR VETERAN FIGHTERS
Jakarta, Sept 23 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has ordered the coordinating minister for people's welfare and other relevant ministers to disburse honorary funds for veteran fighters.
The president issued the instruction in response to a request by the Indonesian Veterans Legion (LVRI) chairman Rais Abin during the World Peace Day commemoration at the Senayan Sports Palace here on Tuesday.
In his address at the event, Abin called on the government to urge its bureaucracy to disburse soon the promised honorary funds for veteran fighters.
"I am sure the veterans will not demand services for what they have done during the time of struggle," the president said adding that it was however the obligation of the government to pay attention to their welfare, including realizing the honorary funds it had promised to them.
The president said he was ordering the relevant offices to realize what the government had decided as a policy, including the disbursement of the honorary funds it had promised for veteran fighters.
According to Rais Abin, the president promised honorary funds for about 400 veteran fighters in Indonesia when he attended the commemoration of LVRI day in 2007.
The government had issued a government regulation on honorary funds for veterans which the president signed on April 5, 2008.
But the veteran fighters had yet to receive the honorary funds which the government had promised to provide between Rp250,000 and Rp400,000 per month for each of them.
The honorary funds do not include the allowance they have received of between Rp600,000 and Rp750,000 per month.
"We are now aged about 80, or close to the end of our lives, so when are the promised honorary funds to be disbursed?" Rais Abin said.
He said he had believed in the president's statement on the disbursement of the funds and "now we are waiting for it."
