GOVT TO CONSIDER GOF APPLICATION FOR RM12 MIL ALLOCATION

RANTAU PANJANG (Malaysia), Sept 23 (Bernama) -- The government will
consider an application from the General Operation Force (GOF) for a RM12
million allocation to improve its basic facilities and equipments.

Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar said basic facilities and equipments were
important to GOF personnel to enable them to discharge their duty
relentlessly.

He was speaking to reporters after visiting the GOF Lubuk Setol Tactical
Camp in this east coast town, Tuesday.

In another development, he said measures to tighten security at the
Malaysian border with Thailand would include coordinating the scope of duties of
various agencies.

"On the whole, I am happy with the security measures at the border but
there are still room for improvement especially in curbing smuggling of drugs,
firearms and fuel," he said.

"We are worried with the smuggling of drugs especially methamphetamine
pills and firearms from the neighbouring country," he said, adding that a
suggestion to build a fence along the border was impossible as it was
costly.
