POLICE WELCOME COMPANIES`, ORGANIZATIONS` COLLECTIVE IDUL FITRI TRAVEL PLANS

Jakarta, Sept 23 (ANTARA) - The police have welcomed the plans of a number of private companies, mass organizations and political parties to organize the collective transportation of their Idul Fitri home-going employees and members, saying the initiative would reduce the number of people making the trips on motorcycle.
"The collective travel initiative is good because it will decrease the number of people traveling out of town on motorcycles," Commissioner General Haryatna, head of the National Police's Public Security Promotion Body, said here Tueday.
He said the initiative was good because it would indirectly reduce the risk of traffic accidents which tended to increase when people used motorcycles. In past exoduses, up to 60 percent of accidents on the road involved motorcycles, he added.
During this year's Idul Fitri holidays, about 2.5 million motorcycles would be used to make home-town- or home-village-bound trips - mostly from Jakarta to West Java, Central Java and East Java.
"The collective travel initiative will also be positive in that the home-bound trips will take place more punctually and orderly," he said.
"Either requested or not requested, the police will give the people traveling collectively guidance and security along the routes," Haryatna added.
Brig Gen Yudi Sushariyanto, director of traffic at National Police headquarters, said up till Tuesday (Sept 23), about 58 companies had confirmed their plans to organize the collective trips.
"One of the companies will use about 100 buses. They will coordinate their departure with the police," Sushariyanto said.
The police would give the home-going caravans traffic guidance from Jakarta up their respective destinatons by assigning an escort to each of them. The escorts would accompany the traveler groups from one province to the other by relay.
