SECURITY SITUATION IN PAPUA `RELATIVELY GOOD` : MINISTER
Jakarta, Sept 23 (ANTARA) - In spite of several small incidents in the eastern Indonesian province of Papua, the security situation in the region is still 'relatively good,' Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Widodo AS said here on Tuesday.
"As we all can see, nothing serious has happened in Papua because the security situation there has remained relatively good," Widodo said after the transfer of the position of Maritime National Security Coordination Board chief.
He said the security situation in conflict-prone areas in general in the runup to the Idul Fitri festivity was relatively conducive.
"Therefore let us maintain the already conducive security conditions," Widodo said, adding the several small incidents that had happened should not be exaggerated.
Widodo expressed hope that the already-conducive security conditions would continue to be maintained until Christmas and the New Year.
Meanwhile, a National Police investigating team has found clues about the perpetrators of a bombing that happened at PT Freeport Indonesia two weeks ago.
Mimika Police chief Adjunct Senior Commissioner Godhelp Mansnembra said two of the bombers had been identified.
"We have identified two of the perpetrators but we will wait for the results of forensic laboratory tests," Mansnembra said.
It was reported from Timika on Tuesday that a group of people hoisted the Bintang Kejora (Morning Star) flag of the separatist Free Papua Organization (OPM) there at 3:15 am local time.
An ANTARA reporter saw the flag being raised by three locals before dozens of others at Cemara street in Timika's Kwamki Baru sub district, at a spot only about 100 meters from a police precinct.
The flag fluttered for about 15 minutes before it was lowered and confiscated by police who also nabbed 18 people along with a number of self-made sharp weapons.
Seven of the 18 arrested people were identified as Arnold Toto, Ike Lamordean, Agustinung Timang, Agus Aim, Albertus Alomang, Benny Yanem, Alpinus Kalaneyane, and Apiator Onawame.
Public order and security in Timika following the flag incident, however, remained under control and people went about their daily activities as usual.
Tuesday morning's incident was the second to have happened in Timika this month. On Wednesday (Sept 17), a group of unidentified locals also raised the separatist OPM flag at Timika's Kwamki Lama square but it was taken down again before police arrived.
