Newcastle Jets tuned up for the coming A-League season with a 1-0 win over Sydney FC in a pre-season friendly in Cessnock on Saturday.
Teenage Jets midfielder James Virgili's first-half goal proved the difference, with Sydney star Nick Carle missing a last-minute penalty which would have salvaged a draw.
The result means the Jets remain undefeated in 10 trial matches ahead of the new campaign.
Newcastle begin their A-League season at home to Melbourne Heart on October 8 while Sydney face Melbourne Victory at Etihad Stadium on the same day.
