Rain-affected people agitating for food
Karachi, September 14, 2011 (PPI): The displaced people of the areas inundated by the torrential rainwater have now started agitating for provision of ration, as according to them the government authorities were doing just lip service and making hollow claims of helping them. According to them hundreds of thousands of homeless people are still awaiting the food.
Even the rain-affected minority community is not content with government’s efforts, which it had been doing, according to official claims.
“One hundred thousand people of minority community affected by the flash floods in Badin district are still awaiting relief from the government,” Shevac Rathore advocate, coordinator, All Pakistan Hindu Rights Movement, Sindh, said in a press conference at Talhar press club on Wednesday. “A large number of villages of Hindu community are under water in Badin district but the authorities have neglected them, who are living under open sky as their houses are submerged.
He warned of severe protest if the authorities continued to neglect the minority community.
Meanwhile, the people of 15 villages of Talhar Tehsil staged demonstration and sit-in at Aareesar bus stop and blocked the Hyderabad-Badin main road to protest against non-provision of ration to the people of inundated villages. They also took out ‘funeral procession’ of PPP MNA Ghulam Ali Nizamani, as according to villagers their villages and crops are totally destroyed but the MNA has not even visited his constituency to take stock of the situation. Khair Muhammad Khaskheli, Muhammad Khan Aareesar, Manthar Mallah, Ghulam Mustafa and others, who led the protest, warned of staging more demonstration if the MNA didn’t visit the area within three days.
The rain-affected villagers of some other villages also staged demonstration for ration near air-base and at Leghari bus stop. They ended protest only after the assurance of local PPP leaders.
The minority community people of village Malanhor Kanji and some other surrounding villages of Tharparkar district also staged demonstration outside Mithi press club seeking government help. According to them their huts were and mud houses washed away by rainwater and the livestock perished but no government authorities have so far approached their area for helping them.
It may be recalled that hundreds of rain-affected homeless people of Umerkot district had also attacked trucks carrying relief goods to get the ration. The police had baton charged them and fired tear gas shells injuring about 20 people. The Umerkot police have registered FIR No:130/2011 under Sections 353, 149, 148 and 147 against 1500 protesters.
In Shadi Large town of Badin district also the rain-affected people had attacked four trucks of relief goods.
There are large scale complaints of government negligence with regard to relief operations. A report from Shahdadpur Tehsil of Sanghar district said 13 union councils of the Tehsil are under rain and saline water that has destroyed 2000 villages making the villagers to migrate to safer places. No authority has initiated rescue and relief operation despite recent visit of Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah who had announced Rs.20 million for relief operation. Seven persons have so far died in rain-related incidents in Shahdadpur Tehsil. The traders, Hindu community and other local philanthropists have setup camps and providing food to affected people. Most of the homeless people could be seen at roadsides, railway platforms and other open spaces.
In Tharparkar district, the people complained that few tents were given to some people by MNA Mahesh Malani while thousands of families are living under open sky along Mithi-Naukot road and Mithi-Kaloi road. The villagers of Dodo Jat village of Kaloi area told that they had provided a list of affected people to MNA Malani and DCO but they disappeared after making promise of help.
A report from Badin said 80 percent people of Pingrio town have become homeless as their houses were under 5ft water and they have no ration.
Same situation has been reported from Tando Adam, Gharo, Thatta, Jati and other areas.
