Sports Hockey Indian players reject Rs 25,000 cash award after beating arch rival Pakistan

New Delhi, September 14, 2011 (PPI): Dejected by the reward offered to Indian hockey team after winning Asian Champions Trophy after beating arch rival Pakistan in Ordos, China, players refused to accept Rs 25,000 per player cash reward offered to them by Hockey India for their latest feat.

Media reports earlier said Sports Minister Ajay Maken had announced reward of Rs 25,000 each during felicitation ceremony of Indian hockey team. However, Maken tweeted this morning that Rs 25000 cash award was not announced by the government but was offered by Hockey India. Minister said the government spends all money on training, coaching & foreign exposure.

After rejecting cash reward, captain Rajpal Singh told Zeenews that his team is disappointed by 'hollow claims of Sports Minister' to revive national sport. "Minister did not come true to our expectations, money should be better not just for motivation of current players but for future generations who’d like to take up national sport," Rajpal said. India beat Pakistan 4-2 in Asian Champions Trophy final.
