Thai PM to visit Cambodia, seek help for two Thai prisoners
BANGKOK, September 14 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra will pay a one-day state visit to Cambodia on Thursday when she will attempt to bring back home two Thai prisoners currently jailed in Phnom Penh.
Cambodian authorities arrested Veera Somkwamkid and Ratree Pipatanapaibul in late December last year on allegations of espionage. They were each sentenced to imprisonment and have been detained in Prey Sar prison for nine months.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Yingluck said she will raise a discussion on the release of Veera and Ratree during her visit to Cambodia, noting however, that the final decision still rests with the Cambodian government.
Yingluck said her government has been concerned over the well-being of the two Thai people as there has been no coordination between authorities from the two countries on the matter.
Meanwhile, the Thai premier said her visit to Cambodia, her first since assuming office as prime minister, will aim at restoring bilateral relations.
However, she refused to comment on whether she will discuss on energy cooperation with the Cambodian leader, saying the issue is sensitive and has to be discussed through diplomatic channels. (TNA)
