Asian top envoys meet Thai FM

BANGKOK, September 14 (TNA) - The Ambassadors to Thailand of Indonesia and Japan paid a courtesy call on Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul on Wednesday to congratulate him on taking new office at the Thai foreign portfolio.

Thai Foreign Ministry Spokesman Thani Thongphakdi told reporters that, when meeting with Indonesian Ambassador to Thailand Mohammed Hatta, the Thai foreign minister underlined the new Thai government’s commitment in strengthening bilateral ties with other member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and in supporting the formation of the ASEAN Single Community by 2015 with all dimensions, including politics, security, economy, culture and communication connectivity.

Thani, who is also Director-General of the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Department of Information, said the Thai foreign minister cited Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra’s visits to Brunei and Indonesia late last week as part of the new Thai government's commitment, saying that the new Thai premier also plans to pay official visits to other ASEAN neighbours, with her trips to Cambodia and Laos scheduled for late this week.

During a later meeting with Japanese Ambassador to Thailand Seiji Kojima, Thani revealed that the Thai foreign minister conveyed best wishes to new Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda for assuming his office recently and expressed his appreciation to Thailand and Japan's determination to further strengthen bilateral cooperation, especially in economic areas, pointing out Japan's high investment rate of up to some 40 per cent in the Thai economy as a good example.

According to the Thai Foreign Ministry spokesman, the Japanese top envoy praised the Thai monarchy, the government and people for dispatching assistance to Japan during devastating natural disasters in the Japanese northeastern region in March, saying that Tokyo is keen to share with Thailand its experiences in disaster management, including that concerning nuclear power plants.
