Governor: Most areas in Bangkok will be safe from floods

BANGKOK, September 14 (TNA) - Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra said on Wednesday that he believes most areas in the Thai capital will be safe from floods in the coming days, as run-offs from upstream provinces have been approaching the city.

M.R. Sukhumbhand told reporters that agencies concerned under his Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) could timely and effectively drain out heaviest downpours in the capital last Sunday, resulting in no inundations in the city's main routes and areas, although mild floods remained in some side-streets.

The governor acknowledged he, therefore, believes that his City Authority will be able to cope with the run-offs from the upstream areas and to prevent most parts of the capital from floods.

The Bangkok governor, however, expressed his concerns over 27 lowest-lying western and eastern communities in the city's 13 districts located beyond the BMA's flood prevention zones, saying that the BMA has kept a close watch on updates and has tried the best to prevent the areas at risk from heavy floods.

According to the Bangkok governor, the BMA will remain on alert until late October when more run-offs from upstream areas and seasonal high tides, probably coupled with heavy downpours, may cause inundations in the city if flood prevention measures have not been staunchly maintained. (TNA)
