Thai Cabinet approves compensation to flood-hit households

BANGKOK, September 13 (TNA) - Government Spokeswoman Thitima Chaisaeng said on Tuesday that the Thai Cabinet has approved in principle a fresh financial compensation for flood-affected households at 5,000 baht each to be sponsored by the government's 2011 fiscal-year budget.

Thitima told reporters that the official financial support, totaling some 3.53 million baht, will go to 705 flood-hit households in Thailand's lower northern Uttaradit Province, and that the Bureau of the Budget will hand out the sum through the Government Savings Bank (GSB).

Earlier, the Thai Ministry of Interior's Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation reported that a flood-triggered landslide killed five people, affected 705 local households and damaged 31 houses in Nam Phai locality of Uttaradit's Nam Pad District on September 9.

According to the government spokesperson, the Thai Cabinet has also approved the 5,000-baht flood compensation rate for 1,523 households in the country's southern Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, 47,078 households in the central Ayutthaya Province and 6,009 households in adjacent Chai Nat Province, all of them suffered from severe inundations last year and have not yet received the official financial assistance, totaling additional 315.87 billion baht.
