Thai PM orders ministers to take care of flood victims

BANGKOK, September 13 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has ordered her Cabinet members to closely supervise rescue missions and quick assistance for flood victims in all affected provinces.

Deputy Government Spokesman Chalitrat Chantharubeksa said that Premier Yingluck made the instruction at the Thai Cabinet's weekly meeting on Tuesday, assigning her ministers to be tasked with separate provinces and to coordinate relief and assistance operations with the local private sector, representatives of affected people, provincial governors and the government's flood-relief center and to report directly to her their work progress.

Chalitrat revealed that the Thai premier has also authorized deputies prime minister to possibly adjust provinces assigned to the ministers to cope with the changing situation and has ordered the Prime Minister’s Secretariat, the Office of the Permanent Secretary under the Prime Minister’s Office and relevant ministries to support the work of the assigned ministers and Deputy Secretary-General to the Prime Minister Police Major Genera Thawat Bunfuang to coordinate the support.

Under the prime ministerial order, Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul, Transport Minister Air Chief Marshal Sukumpol Suwanatat and Minister Attached to the Prime Minister's Office Kitsana Seehalak, for instance, supervise flood relief operations in Mae Hong Son, Sukhothai and Uttaradit Provinces; while Social Development and Human Security Minister Santi Promphat oversees the same missions in Pitsanulok and Petchabun Provinces.

The deputy government spokesman said Premier Yingluck would chair an event, to be live broadcast on the government-supervised Modernine TV and NBT, in the evening of September 14 to raise donations for the flood victims.

Meanwhile, the Thai government’s flood-relief center reported that the widespread floods have now remained in 21 provinces, from a total of 44 provinces, warning that runoffs and landslides are possible in seven provinces at risk, namely Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son, Tak, Kanchanaburi, Rayong, Chanthaburi and Trat.
