Many Thai provinces ravaged by floods

BANGKOK, September 13 (TNA) - Deep flooding has continued in many Thai provinces, particularly in the North where recent floods have turned houses, farms and roads into lakes.

In Uttaradit province, heavy downpours in Nam Pat district overnight had alarmed the local people and obstructed relief work.

In Phichit province, knee deep floodwaters had penetrated a 20-kilometer long railway track, causing trains to run at low speeds while delaying services for about four hours. The State Railway of Thailand said it could suspend its northern rail services if floods rise 15-20 centimeters above the track.

At least fifty-six families in Kong Krailat district in Sukhothai province had reportedly been isolated for nearly two months. The provincial governor said he had instructed officials to provide them all necessary means of assistance.

In the East, the water level in Chanthaburi river had risen on Monday night, inundating nearby business areas. Many families had relocated to higher grounds, with more than 500 riverside houses now affected.

In Ubon Ratchathani province, schools had remained closed for the seventh-straight day as the trail of destruction brought by tropical storm Noc-ten had spread to a wider area. (TNA)
