UN chief sends message to N. Korea's Kim Jong-il: report

SEOUL, Sept. 22 (Yonhap) -- U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has sent a congratulatory message to North Korean leader Kim Jong-il for the 60th anniversary of the communist state's founding, according to a North Korean radio report monitored here Monday.

Radio Pyongyang said Secretary-General Ban sent the message on Sept. 3. It was
the first time since Ban's inauguration two years ago for a North Korean media to
directly state his name while reporting his activities.
The North Korean radio quoted Ban as saying that he was very happy to extend his
heartfelt congratulations to the government and people of the Democratic Republic
of Korea on the occasion of the republic's foundation anniversary.
