Thai PM works for societal benefits

BANGKOK, September 13 (TNA) - Government Spokeswoman Thitima Chaisaeng said on Tuesday that new Pheu Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has maintained her stance on performing her duty to the best for the sake of societal benefits.
Thitima told reporters that Premier Yingluck has insisted on keeping to work for public and national interests and to promote sound relations between Thailand and neighbouring countries.
The government spokeswoman's remarks were in response to former Democrat Thai prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva's recent comments that Yingluck should give priority to societal benefits, rather than trying to assist any individual when she pays a one-day official visit to neighbouring Cambodia on September 15, implying his warning for Yingluck, who is Thaksin's youngest sister, not to seek any assistance or facilitation for Thaksin during her trip to Cambodia.
Thaksin reportedly plans to negotiate with Cambodian authorities on a business deal during his forthcoming visit to Phnom Penh from September 16-24, along with his other schedules. The former Thai premier was sentenced to a two-year jail term in 2008 by the Thai Supreme Court's Division of Political Positions' Holders for allowing his wife at that time, Khunying Pojaman na Pombejra, to purchase an underpriced plot of state-controlled land in Bangkok's Ratchadaphisek area, prompting the convicted ex-Thai premier to have lived in self-imposed exile overseas ever since.
The Thai government's spokesperson confirmed the new Pheu Thai Party-led administration's position on allowing the criminal case against Thaksin to be proceeded in legal procedures. (TNA)
