New Thai DPM not to seek Thaksin's arrest

BANGKOK, September 13 (TNA) - New Thai Deputy Prime Minister Police Captain Chalerm Yubumrung has rejected the opposition’s demand for his Pheu Thai Party-led government to ask Cambodia to arrest exiled ex-Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who is scheduled to visit the neighbouring country next week, reasoning that Thaksin did nothing which justifies an arrest.
As Thaksin would reportedly visit Cambodia on September 19 for business talks, Police Captain Chalerm said Thaksin has his right for the scheduled trip, urging the opposition to raise questions on the issue at a parliamentary session; so, he could answer all of them once and for all.
The new Pheu Thai deputy premier was responding to the now opposition Democrat Party’s demand for his government to seek the arrest and extradition of Thaksin, who has escaped a two-year jail term in Thailand since 2008. Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva has urged the Thai society to monitor whether Thaksin’s upcoming visit to Cambodia, following new Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra’s official visit to the neighbouring country on September 15, would involve any conflict of interest concerning an overlapping marine area of Thailand and Cambodia.
Regarding a plan of the ruling Pheu Thai Party's MPs, who are also pro-Thaksin red shirt protesters, to visit neighbouring Cambodia for a friendly football match with Cambodian authorities on September 24, Abhisit said the Thai court would decide whether the red-shirts could leave the country, as they were prosecuted for involving in violent riots during their political protest last year.
