Hotels in Phuket back Bt300 minimum wage

PHUKET, September 13 (TNA) - Hoteliers in Thailand's southern resort Phuket Province have voiced their support for the new government's 300-baht daily minimum wage policy.
Songkran Issara, managing director of Charn Issara Development and Sri Panwa Resort in Phuket, pointed out the growing gap between high and low-paid workers, saying, however, that most employers in the renowned Thai resort province has already paid their workers more than 300 baht a day.
Songkran conceded that the daily minimum wage hike will likely affect production costs in some local industries, especially those owned by small and medium-sized enterprises, noting that the new Pheu Thai Party-led government's planned corporate income tax cut, which will help local businesses save some 7 per cent of their tax payment in the 2012 fiscal year, is believed to lessen their rising cost burden.
Phuket is one of seven pilot provinces said to be approved with the 300-baht daily minimum wage by the new Thai government by early next year. The renowned southern Thai resort island's tourism industry has grown significantly over the past six months with its hotel occupancy rate of 70-80 per cent on average. (TNA)
