International Workshop on Combating Money Laundering, Terrorist Financing
Doha, September 12 (QNA) - A joint workshop between the World Bank and Egmont Group on "Statistical Analysis Course" began here Monday.
The four-day workshop, hosted by Qatar Financial Information Unit, aims at exchanging expertise in the use and development of methods for strategic analysis and evaluating types of activities on money laundering and terrorism financing.
Addressing the opening of the workshop, which attended by HE Deputy Governor and Chairman of the National Anti- Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing Committee Sheikh Fahad bin Faisal Al Thani, HE Head of Qatar Financial Information Unit Sheikh Ahmed bin Eid Al Thani said that Qatar since the international community has first launched the fight against money laundering and terrorist financing, the State of Qatar was devoted to joining the international community in its serious endeavour to combat these organized crimes, therefore we were keen to be involved in the "Strategic Analysis Course", knowing its importance for the FIUs, which will allow them to use and develop the strategic intelligence to provide direction on their own operations and better analyze money laundering, terrorist financing and other crimes that threat the security of a country s financial systems.
He said the State of Qatar is also one of the founding members of the MENAFATF, and the QFIU is currently chairing the Technical Committee formed by the FIUs Forum of MENAFATF which was established in 2010, and aim at activating communication channels between the FIUs of MENAFATF, to establish a long lasting regional cooperation that supports the exchange of expertise and knowledge and help them in fulfilling their role in combating ML/TF.
HE Head of Qatar Financial Information Unit Sheikh Ahmed bin Eid Al Thani also said that the QFIU also seeks to achieve the national strategy to combat money laundering and terrorism financing, being the operational party of the AML/CFT regime, and is looking to strengthen its core technical functions within its strategic vision and annual work plans, mainly the tactical, operational and strategic analysis, in addition to the administrative support, especially the Information Technology- related programs.
He wished that the workshop will encourage international cooperation and stimulate the exchange of information, expertise and ideas.
He noted that this workshop is attended by 31 representatives from 29 jurisdictions, in addition to a group of international experts in the field of financial analysis, pointing out that this participation indicates the high International commitment to the global fight against money laundering and terrorist financing.
