Brandis welcomes HSU investigation
SYDNEY (AAP) - 12 Sept - The federal opposition has expressed delight that NSW police have launched a "full-blooded" investigation into the Health Services Union (HSU).
Police on Monday announced the formation of Strike Force Carnarvon to investigate alleged inappropriate practices within the union.
The new inquiry was launched after union representatives provided "additional information" on Monday morning.
The move comes just days after NSW police announced there was no evidence to warrant a criminal investigation of former HSU boss and now Labor backbencher Craig Thomson over the use of union-issued credit cards.
Opposition legal affairs spokesman George Brandis said it was now clear that Labor's "jubilation" at last week's announcement had been premature.
"Evidently the full weight of the NSW Police Force will be put behind the investigation which we the opposition have been requesting for several weeks now," Senator Brandis told Sky News.
"We were always quite sure that there was a lot more to come and that a full-blooded investigation was warranted.
"I'm delighted that the NSW police have arrived at this conclusion."
