M'SIAN BUSINESS CHAMBER EYES US$2.94 MLN SALES AT CHINA'S EXPO

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 22 (Bernama) -- The Malay Chamber of Commerce MalaysiaV (DPMM) is expecting sales of about RM10 million (US$2.94 million) at the expo and trade mission to Xi'Ning, Qinghai, in China from Oct 8-15.

Organised by DPMM, the expo is held in conjunction with the 2008 China
(Qinghai) International Halal Food and Products Fair.

DPMM president Syed Ali Alattas said the expo is an opportunity to
introduce
Malaysian halal products for the Chinese market as Qinghai province has a huge
Muslim population of 1.1 million.

Syed Ali said DPMM is aiming to capture 10 provinces in China to achieve
its
RM100 million (US29.41 million) sales target next year from the Chinese market.

He, however, said this is a challenging task for both DPMM and Malay
food
producers as it would test their ability to come up with constant supply to
ensure Malaysian products are available on time.

"We have the market but the products are not enough. Small producers have
problems producing and we are looking how to help them increase their
production," he said.

Syed Ali said DPMM had met with several ministries to help small producers
in terms of funding, support and product development, quality, packaging and
halal certification.

He also said DPMM will meet the newly-appointed Finance Minister Najib
Razak to further discuss the matter.

On another development, Syed Ali said the Chamber of Commerce and Industry
in Hadramout has allocated a space for DPMM to set up an office in Yemen, either
in Aden or Mukalla.

"The office is important to coordinate our position to further serve the
Middle East market and China, he said.

In view of the Middle East market's huge potential, Syed Ali said DPMM is
organising a trade mission to Yemen and Syria from Dec 16-24.

"There are opportunities as most of their products and consumer goods are
imported," he added.
