Thai PM targets to reduce narcotic problems by 80% before the year ends

BANGKOK, September 11 (TNA) - Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has announced her goal to reduce narcotic problems including drug-trafficking cases and number of drug abusers by 80 percent within this year.

Yingluck made the announcement of the set target Sunday after presiding over a meeting at which the Thai premier also made know the government’s anti-narcotics policy to her deputies Chalerm Yubamrung and Yongyuth Wichaidit, Army Chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha, and other public sector’s officials while anti-narcotics operation was launched as a national agenda.

The Thai premier said narcotic problems have worsened in the past few years in term of both number of drug-trafficking cases and drug abusers, noting that over 1.3 million drug traffickers and drug users have been arrested this year, representing an increase of about 400,000 from 2007.

To this extend, Yingluck said her government has come up with a 7:4:3:6 strategy for relevant agencies to use in suppressing and preventing the spread of narcotics, adding that it will also set up a command center against narcotics with Police Captain Chalerm Yubamrung as the director to oversee the policy implementation.

According to the prime minister, the 7:4:3:6 strategy highlights plans involving law enforcement, international cooperation, empowerment of local communities, rehabilitation of drug addicts, and drug interception at border areas. It also aims to improve intelligence work, role of public officials, regulations and the attitude of people. (TNA)
