Activists in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province rally against coal-fired power plant plan
BANGKOK, September 11 (TNA) - a group of environmental activists has staged a rally in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province’s Thap Sakae District, demanding the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) to scrap its coal-fired power plant project.
The group Sunday organized a public hearing session about the EGAT’s plans to construct coal-fired power plant in the province with hundred of audiences including the Governor of Prachuap Khiri Khan Province , representatives of the EGAT and concerned government offices, academics, and local people.
During the session, the activists aired their fear for the health of local people if the EGAT plans to continue developing a coal-fired power plant on a 6.4-square-kilometer seaside land plot in Thap Sakae District.
They suggested the EGAT to relocate a group of people affected by another coal-fired power plant in Lampang Province’s Mae Mo District to the land plot in Thap Sakae District, saying that the move would solve both their problem and the problem of affected people in Lampang Province.
The environmental activists also submitted a written request to Vice Governor of Prachuap Khiri Khan Province Nirawat Punnakun, which would then be conveyed to Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra for consideration. (TNA)
