Tight security at Thai-Myanmar border to prevent cross-border drug smuggling
BANGKOK, September 11 (TNA) – Thai authorities in the northernmost province of Chiang Rai have continued with tight security along Thai-Myanmar border in a bid to prevent cross-border drug smuggling.
Local police, soldiers of the Phamuang Task Force, border patrol police from the 327 Mae Chan Border Patrol Police Unit, Chiang Saen District’s marine police and paramilitary rangers from the 31st Paramilitary Ranger Regiment, were Sunday deployed to high risk areas along the border to check on drug smuggling.
At Mae Sai Border Check Point in Thailand’s Chiang Rai Province, opposite of Myanmar’s province of Tachilek, authorities were put on high alert. All vehicles and visitors’ bags coming from the Myanmar’s province were strictly searched.
The authorities also conducted boat patrols on the Mae Sai River, a 15-kilometers-long natural borderline between Thailand and Myanmar stretching from Wiang Pang Kham Sub-district to Koh Chang Sub-district -- which is considered the main smuggling route of drug smugglers.
Furthermore, authorities set up seven checkpoints on a section of Phahon Yothin Highway between Mae Sai District and Phayao Province to search all suspect vehicles.
These operations were part of the Thai government’s policy on narcotic suppression, which aims to promote security operations of local authorities in an integrated fashion to solve narcotic problem. (TNA)
