Brunei wants more Thai jasmine rice: PM

BANGKOK, September 11 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said early Sunday upon her arrival in Bangkok after a one-day official visit to Brunei Saturday that the Southeast Asian country wants to import more jasmine rice from Thailand.

The Prime Minister Saturday night was granted an audience with His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei at the Istana Nurul Iman Palace to introduce herself as the new Thai premier.

Speaking after the meeting, Yingluck said that the Sultan of Brunei said his country planned to import more Thai jasmine rice, having already read about Thai rice milling activities under His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej royal development projects.

Yingluck also noted that Brunei also promised to work with her government and to deepen Brunei-Thai cooperation on education, medicine, agriculture and labour. She, in turn, said her government would offer fully support for Brunei to become the ASEAN chair in 2013.

Before departing the country, the Sultan of Brunei hosted a dinner for Yingluck and her delegations. The Thai premier and her delegations arrived in Bangkok at 12:45 a.m. Sunday. (TNA)
