PT KA READY TO OPERATE EXTRA IDUL FITRI TRAINS WHEN NEEDED
Bandarlampung, Sept 22 (ANTARA) - State-owned railway company PT Kereta Api (PT KA) is ready to operate extra trains or put more carriages in service to accommodate the expected drastic increase in passengers for the 2008 Idul Fitri exodus, a spokesman said.
"If the number of passengers exceeds the number of train seats we have prepared, we will provide more trains or carriages immediately," PT KA President Director Ronny Wahyudi said here Sunday evening.
If necessary, the extra trains and carriages would be put into operation seven days before Idul Fitri, he added.
Wahyudi said for Idul Fitri 2008, PT KA had prepared 11 extra trains and two community trains to meet the public's need for transportation to travel to their home towns or villages in Java.
"As many as 67 extra passenger carriages have been prepared. They consist of 27 commercial train carriages, 20 economy class carriages and 20 community train carriages (carriages without seats)." he said.
The number of people using trains to travel to their home towns or villages during this year's Idul Fitri holidays was estimated to be about 15 to 20 percent higher than last year.
Previously, Transportation Minister Jusman Syafii Djamal also affirmed the readiness of PT KA's facilities and staff to serve Idul Fitri travelers using trains.
"Based on the estimated increase in the number of travelers and seating capacity, about 93 percent can be handled and accommodated," the minister said.
Of the total of 26 million people expected to travel for Idul Fitri reunions in their home towns or villages, at least 3 million would use trains.
