Critical flooding remains in several Thai provinces

BANGKOK, September 9 (TNA) - Severe flooding has remained in several Thai provinces, particularly those located along the country's main Chao Phraya River.

In Nakhon Sawan Province, the current floods have hit six districts, causing hardships to over 17,600 households and damaging over 200 square kilometres of local farmlands. The floodwater has remained over two metres deep in Pak Nam-pho and Muang Districts, where over 20,000 sandbags have been placed to protect local business areas.

In Sing Buri Province, the ongoing inundations have been expanding largely in In Buri District, troubling over 300 households, particularly in Baan Bang Chom-sri area, as the floodwater has risen by 50 centimetres as of Friday.

In Pitsanulok Province, Phrom Phiram, Bang Rakam and Muang Districts along the Yom River have remained heavily flooded for a month. The floodwater is over three metres deep in some areas, submerging over 160 square kilometres of local farmlands. The Phrom Phiram district chief admitted that the current flooding is the most severe in a decade.

In Pichit Province, the Yom River has overflowed to a business area in Pho Prathabchang District's Phai Thapho locality, with the floodwater measured nearly one- metre deep.

In Uttaradit Province, flash floods and mudslides, triggered by heavy downpours, hit three villages in Nam-pad District overnight, killing one villager and injuring more than 10 others; while some 10 others have remained missing.

Even in Thailand's southernmost Narathiwat Province, storms damaged over 70 local houses on Thursday night, some of which were crushed by fallen big trees.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Warning Centre issued its updated warning for people in Thailand's northeastern and eastern regions to brace for more downpours, from September 9-12, with heavy falls in some areas and possible flash floods and landslides. (TNA)
