Qatar Panel in Brazil for Schools Olympic Event

Doha, September 08 (QNA) - An official delegation from Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) left for the Brazilian city of Joao Pessoa Thursday to attend the events of Brazil s Schools Olympic to be held there from September 9 to 15.
The QOC delegation is attending the week-long event at the official invitation of Brazil Olympic Committee (BOC). The Qatari group will participate along with other National Olympic Committee representative in the activities scheduled by the BOC, a QOC report said today.
The QOC delegation will hold meetings with their Brazilian counterparts to review a wide range of topics related to sport and education. The panel will also brief Brazilian sports officials on the outcomes of Qatar's pioneering sport programme 'Schools Olympic Programme' (SOP) over the past five years.
SOP was launched in Qatar in response to the initiative of HH the Heir Apparent Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani who is also the President of QOC. The aim was to link sports activities with school curriculum and encourages students to pursue sports as well.
The SOP made its debut in Qatar in the academic year 2007-2008 under theme of 'Sport for Health'.
For the second edition of SOP in 2008-2009 the theme was ‘Sport and Environment'. 'Sport and Culture' was the theme of the 2009-2010 edition and last year it was 'Sport and Education'. (QNA)
