Thai park officials to take action on encroachers in 60 days

BANGKOK, September 8 (TNA) - Thailand’s Department of National Park, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) has warned national park officials to take action against encroachers within 60 days or risk losing their jobs.

Newly-appointed chief of DNP Damrong Pidech issued the warning at a seminar on Thursday, held in a bid to carry out public hearing on a five-year strategy for sustainable national park management.

Speaking at the seminar, Damrong assured he had instructed park officials to inspect national park areas and report within 60 days any discovery of deforestation or encroachment cases, saying those who failed to cooperate could be transferred from their posts.

Damrong also said he had ordered a special task force comprising 200 officials to investigate the encroachment at Wang Nam Keaw national reserve, warning that the DNP would unilaterally demolish any building inhabited under court eviction orders. (TNA)
